Mould-Making

A mould is used to produce mouldings, to get a quality mould you need a quality plug.

There are many different types of moulds and choosing the correct one for your requirement is important.

Mould’s for composite products can be made from a variety of materials including Polyester, Vinylester, Epoxy reinforced with Fibreglass or Carbon Fibre and can also be machined directly from Aluminium or other materials.  They come in different forms including open moulds, infusion moulds and Resin Transfer Moulds (RTM).  Mould selection depends on what material your moulding is made from and the number of mouldings you require.

Certain factors need to be considered when creating a mould as the moulding needs to be releasable whilst having minimal secondary work on the moulding after release.

A Quality mould will produce a quality moulding with minimal finishing works which ultimately reflects in the final cost of the product.

We offer Mould-making services for most types of composites moulds of varying complexity.

Infusion Moulds using Silicon bags with Micro-Morph technology

Sound Composites Ltd have been collaborating with Alan Harper Composites and testing silicon bagging with the new Micro-Morph System on one of our existing infusion moulds.  The new Micro-Morph from Alan Harper Composites allows the operator to control resin feed to the mould switching it on and off on demand.

When Micro-Morph is incorporated into a silicon vacuum bag it provides a reusable easy to use closed moulding system which eliminates the requirement of single use materials such as vacuum bags, tacky tape, spiral wrap, infusion mesh and peel-ply as well as the extra resin all these single use materials hold.  It also significantly reduces set-up time as none of these materials need to be cut and prepped; it also reduces de-mould time.

Having used this system for a short period of time we are already seeing improvements in quality and the benefits of more efficient processing times and reductions in waste.  As we move forward we will be using this method on all our future infusion moulds and explaining the benefits of this new system to our clients.

Conventional Resin Infusion Moulds

Resin infusion is a process in which dry materials are placed within the mould and resin is drawn through by the aid of vacuum.  This allows the product to be more consistent in thickness and weight than the open moulding processes.

Sound Composites Ltd. offer mould making and manufacture services using the resin infusion process for various composites including Carbon Fibre and Fibreglass using Epoxy, Vinylester or Polyester resins.

Open Mould Manufacture

Open Moulds are a more traditional way of manufacturing GRP products.  We manufacture all shapes and sizes of moulds with varying complexity.

The pictured mould is for our T2 Campervan interior  L-Shaped seat and consists of 7 separate mould pieces in order to produce and demoed a part in one piece.

We offer moulds for producing Epoxy, Vinylester or Polyester parts.

Mould Modification and Refurbishment

We can offer mould modification and refurbishment in order to recycle obsolete moulds.

One customer who utilised this service had an old panel mould modified to manufacture their Swim-Jet panels.

By utilising this service you can cut time and cost compared to manufacturing a new mould, whilst helping the environment.
